Inspiring the Next Generation: St. Edward Volunteer Fire Department’s Junior Firefighter Day

For the third year in a row, the St. Edward Volunteer Fire Department (SEVFD) hosted its Junior Firefighter Day, an event designed to introduce local high school juniors to the world of firefighting and emergency response. With 28 students from St. Edward and Newman Grove participating, the 2025 event was a huge success, offering hands-on learning experiences and fostering a sense of community service among the next generation.

A Day of Learning and Action

The event took place on Monday, March 31, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with a homemade breakfast provided by Sarah Forinash, BigIron’s Post Auction Titles Coordinator and an active member of the St. Edward Fire and Rescue Squad. Students enjoyed her famous sourdough cinnamon rolls, coffee, and orange juice before the day’s activities officially began. Brent, the department’s training officer, kicked off the event with a bunker gear and SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) demonstration.

One of the highlights of the morning was the arrival of Apollo MedFlight Nebraska. Students watched as the medical helicopter landed and listened to a detailed presentation about life flight operations and emergency medical air transport. Before lunch, representatives from Central Community College (CCC) shared information about their EMS and nursing programs, giving students insight into potential career paths in emergency services.

The afternoon featured three hands-on training stations that quickly became the most anticipated part of the day. Students rotated through search and rescue exercises, practiced vehicle extraction techniques using the Jaws of Life, and participated in a first aid and CPR training session. These immersive experiences allowed students to step into the role of first responders and see firsthand the challenges and rewards of emergency response work.

As a token of appreciation for their participation, Bryan Molt, BigIron Territory Manager and proud supporter of the program, donated BigIron bags to all the students.

The Importance of Early Outreach

Molt emphasized the importance of engaging young people early in community service roles. “We need to show these kids how vital their contributions can be to their communities,” Molt said. “Programs like this open their eyes to the real need for volunteer firefighters and emergency responders in rural areas.”

Forinash highlighted the pressing need for new volunteers in emergency services. “Fire and rescue numbers are horrendously low,” she explained. “Many communities rely on neighboring departments for support, which can lead to critical delays in emergency situations. We hope to instill in these students a desire to give back to the communities that have supported them throughout their lives. Just as their families and neighbors showed up for their little league games, school events, and concerts, now is their opportunity to step up and support their community in a life-changing way.”

Community Support Makes It Possible

SEVFD’s Junior Firefighter Program is more than just a recruitment tool — it’s a way to equip young people with life-saving skills and leadership experience. However, running and expanding such programs requires community support. Donations help provide essential training materials, safety gear, and even basic first aid kits for students to carry in their vehicles.

With participation growing each year, the program is making a lasting impact on the future of emergency response in rural communities. By investing in youth education and involvement, St. Edward and its neighboring towns are ensuring a stronger, safer future for everyone.
